Server Optimization Guide (1.14.x / 1.15.x / 1.16.x)
Due to the 1.14.4 patch of Minecraft being optimised poorly we have provided some steps for you to follow in order to make this patch run smoother on your server. Although these may not stop all of the performance issues, they should provide a more stable and playable server.
Reducing view distance
View distance is one of the key issues in this patch, causing a large amount of additional strain on the server. From our testing, a server view distance of 7 is the most optimum for gameplay vs performance. By default all servers are set to 7, however if you wish to change this then please do the following;
- Open your Nitropanel account
- Navigate to the File Manager
- Right click on Server.properties and Edit
- Scroll down to View-Distance
- Change this to 7 ( or your desired view distance)
Please be aware that every increase in view distance add an increasing amount of strain to the server, so even lowering by a tickrate of 1 can improve your performance drastically.
Installing paper
Paper is a variation of the popular Bukkit mod for Minecraft. With the latest version of Paper a number of optimizations have been added that Bukkit does not provide, so currently it’s our go-to for servers. To install this, please follow the steps below;
- Firstly, you will need to open Nitropanel
- Once you are on the Nitropanel click onto the Mods & Updates tab
- Click onto the Bukkit tab
- Use the search bar or scroll down and look for Paper
- Click install button and this will upload to your server
- Restart the server
Installing clearlagg
Once you have installed paper on to your server you can add the plugin “clearlagg” to help reduce the number of objects in the world that could cause additional performance hits. To install this plugin, follow these steps;
- Click here to install ClearLagg and click Download Latest File
- Now head to your Nitropanel account
- Open File Manager
- Open the Plugins folder
- Click Upload
- Upload the .jar file you just downloaded
- Restart the server
